A moment in time has been discussed and taught in the school strongly for several weeks now. This idea came to me as I was teaching several new students the concept of fighting principal number three, ( shortest distance between two points is a straight line. It occurred to me that the two were related to each other if you expanded on the fighting principal. If a person is attacked and defends against this attack you are only doing part of the fighting principal, yet if one attacks the opponent the moment they attack you, gain a moment in time because most people are trained to attack than block, than attack again. If we teachers of wing chun are teaching correctly than we are teaching our students to gain a moment of time because we are already ahead of the attacker by one motion and usually two or three. Teaching several students who came from other schools of martial arts it is very difficult to explain how to do both, attack and defend at the same time. I try to explain how Wing Chun uses both sides of the brain at the same time and I also show how the air drills begin along with there individual concepts. Yet many stand confused by all, I have also learned that a good air drill is exactly that a good air drill. When you put a person against another persona nod tell them to do the air drills facing each other they find they are totally confused in how to perform the same drill they have been doing for two months. They find that flesh and bone feel different than air. I had to find a way to explain how to gain, while being attacked. When I thought upon fighting principal number three for several days . It occurred to me that this is exactly what we are achieving but that it is simplified in the principal. Yet may do not see the point of view. When I explained to two student is idea of a moment in time they understood the idea better than I hoped for. They now strike straight at any break and find that there target is easy to find. I have also noticed that speed is increased greatly because they already know in there mind that they will hit first thus taking away the attackers energy. And increasing confidence in themselves. Thus they learn not to be afraid of the attack and can see though an attack easier, for now they look to find the moment of time, along with a follow up strike.
Second part of
this goal is get allow each person to realize that they do not need to
strike right away and to wait for that moment in time. Many are still
looking at every strike to be the big haymaker when two or three moves
later they can find it easier.
